While it is possible to determine failures in the inside of a material with the ultrasonic method, you can only determine surface faults with the magnetic testing method.
These surface discontinuities don’t necessarily need to be cracks, they could also be die marks from the original material. The crack depth itself can be determined by a cross-section polish.
